What are the precautions for using diesel generator sets in high altitude areas?

Due to the low air pressure, thin air and relatively small oxygen content in the plateau area, especially for naturally aspirated diesel engines (considering the tendency of delayed ignition under plateau conditions and in order to improve the operating economy of diesel engines, it is generally recommended that naturally aspirated diesel engines be supplied with fuel in advance), the lack of air intake and poor combustion conditions prevent the diesel engine from delivering the originally specified calibration power. Even if the basic structure of a diesel engine is the same, the calibrated power of various diesel engines differs and therefore their ability to work on the plateau differs. As the altitude rises, the power decreases and the exhaust temperature rises, the user should also consider the plateau working capacity of the diesel engine when choosing a diesel engine and strictly avoid overload operation.

According to experiments in recent years, the exhaust gas turbocharging method plays a very important role in the power compensation of diesel engines in plateau areas. Exhaust gas bogey wheel boosting can not only compensate for the lack of power at plateau, but also improve smoke colour, restore power performance and reduce fuel consumption rate.

 

With the rise of altitude, the ambient temperature is also lower than the plain area, generally every 1000 litres, the ambient temperature drops about 0.6, due to the thin air of the plateau, the starting performance of diesel engines is also worse than the plain area. Users should take the corresponding auxiliary starting measures with low temperature starting.


Due to the elevation, the boiling point of water decreases, the wind pressure of cooling air and the quality of cooling air decreases, the heat dissipation per kilowatt per unit of time increases, and the cooling conditions of diesel engine cooling system are worse than the plains. Generally speaking, it is not advisable to use open cooling cycle in high altitude areas, and a pressurized closed cooling system can be used to increase the boiling point of the plateau coolant.
