46 Units: Lighting Up Every Island

Due to its unique geography, the Maldives has no unified land-based power grid. Its 1,192 coral islands are scattered across the Indian Ocean, with nearly 200 inhabited islands each running independent power systems. One generator set is the power heart of an entire island.

The 46 units delivered by Tide Power will be deployed to different inhabited islands based on each island’s population and electricity load — every single unit must independently shoulder the power supply responsibility for one island.

The advantages of Tide Power’s FB-series open-type units are particularly pronounced in this scenario: the simple structure facilitates sea transport and hoisting, adapting to inter-island transfer logistics; open maintenance access allows island technicians to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting themselves. Across islands that can only see each other across the water, maintainability is reliability.

Island Operating Conditions: High Heat, High Humidity, High Salt Spray

The units are equipped with Cummins diesel engines and Stamford alternators, covering multiple power ranges. This combination has a long track record of validation in the global power generation sector, particularly suited to continuous-duty applications. Some units are also equipped with independent fuel tanks, further enhancing on-site fuel storage and supply assurance.

The Maldives is located in the tropics, with year-round high temperatures and humidity consistently above 80%. Salt-spray corrosion is a constant reality that every piece of equipment must confront. Cummins engines have accumulated extensive application experience in tropical and island environments, and the open-type design facilitates heat dissipation and ventilation, adapting to continuous operation under high temperatures. Stamford alternators’ insulation systems and moisture-resistant treatment provide additional electrical safety assurance under hot and humid conditions.
